Stroke Q & A

What is a stroke?

A stroke is a serious, potentially life-threatening complication that’s caused by an interruption in blood flow to part of your brain. When this occurs, delicate brain cells don’t get the oxygen and nutrients they require to function, which can lead to cellular death (in as little as a few minutes).

The most common type of stroke is an ischemic stroke, which stems from the narrowing of a brain blood vessel. Fatty deposits that build up in your blood vessels, blood clots, or debris are often to blame. You can also suffer from a hemorrhagic stroke, meaning you have a blood vessel that has leaked or ruptured.

Because a stroke causes serious complications, it’s important to seek emergency medical attention if you have a drooping face, problems lifting an arm, or slurred speech, to name a few issues.

What complications occur after a stroke?

Depending on the severity of your stroke and which part of your brain was affected, temporary or permanent issues may arise. Some of the most common complications that occur after a stroke include:

  • Chronic pain, including burning or numbness in your extremities
  • Decreased muscle movement or paralysis
  • Difficulty speaking or swallowing
  • Memory loss
  • Poor focus

Premier Neurology is dedicated to ensuring you restore your quality of life after having a stroke, no matter how minor or how severe your symptoms may be.

How does a doctor treat stroke disabilities?

Dr. Hussaini brings years of experience in treating stroke patients to Premier Neurology. He’s skilled in the most up-to-date rehabilitation solutions and spends quality time caring for you throughout your treatment plan. Managing stroke disabilities may include any of the following therapies:

  • Occupational therapy
  • Physical therapy
  • Speech therapy
  • Dietary counseling

Depending on the cause of your stroke, you might also need medications to lower your risk of stroke in the future. Blood thinner medications, for instance, can prevent clots.

In more severe cases, you might need surgery after a stroke. Surgery to remove plaque buildup or to place stents can further reduce your risk of a future stroke.
